National Network for CBNRM in Madagascar

National Network for CBNRM in Madagascar – National de Gestion des Ressources Naturelles Basée sur la Communauté à Madagascar (GRNBC)

Madagascar has a number of organisations working to support communities that manage and use natural resources, particularly marine and freshwater species, forest products and land for agriculture. While these organisations may collaborate on specific projects, there is no formal network that covers the management of all natural resources and can advocate jointly for the rights of local communities in Madagascar.

The Community Leaders Network therefore organised a strategic meeting on 8 and 9 October 2024 with the Mihari Network, Beolobe and Natiora Defenders. This meeting was funded by Jamma International and brought together 29 stakeholders, including two government entities, to discuss the need for a national network dedicated to Community- Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) in Madagascar.

During this meeting, all present agreed that a national CBNRM network was necessary and therefore established a preparatory committee of 10 stakeholders to drive the process forward. The participants established a clear roadmap to establish and formalise this network by mid-2025. They identified key stakeholder groups that would be invited to become a part of the network: local communities, civil society organisations, government authorities (national, regional and local), universities, private sector, and technical and financial partners.

CLN and its partners look forward to seeing this new network grow and start to make an impact in the lives of local communities in Madagascar.
